Sun's Open-source Boss Slams App Engine's Java Support

Google committed a major transgression by only including support for a subset of Java classes in its App Engine development platform, according to Sun Microsystems' chief open source officer, Simon Phipps. "Whether you agree with Sun policing it or not, Java compatibility has served us all very well for over a decade," Phipps wrote in an April 11 blog post. Verizon Tips LTE Specs

Verizon Wireless today put out their first round of specs for their upcoming 4G LTE network, and they want to remind folks: "Initially, Verizon Wireless will be providing packet data service over the Verizon Wireless LTE 3GPP Band 13 network."

That means the first LTE devices will be more about tapping into LTE's 8-12 Mbps data speeds than about making phone calls.

The specs describe basic requirements to connect to Verizon's upcoming network, and they're pretty much unreadable unless you have a degree in electrical engineering. But a quick perusal of the specs reveals two more interesting tidbits: IPv6 will be required, and support for Verizon's 3G CDMA network will not. ... Read Full Article

Intel Rivals Gang up to Make Mobile Chips

A host of chip makers, including IBM, on Thursday announced a partnership to develop low-power chips for mobile devices, which could challenge Intel's burgeoning presence in the space. IBM is allying with companies including Samsung and GlobalFoundries, which makes chips for Advanced Micro Devices, to develop smaller chips for devices like smartphones and mobile Internet devices.
